About FBI

Our Mission

At Freshwater Boardriders club, we strive to play our role in the community of fostering the growth and development of junior surfing, as well as providing a positive environment in which people of all ages can feel welcome and have fun.

With 50 years of history, Freshwater Boardriders has provided a vital stepping-stone for young surfers to develop their competitive surfing skills and gain invaluable experience that has allowed them to flourish in their junior surfing careers on a state, national and international level.

As we continue to grow as a club, last year we introduced our first ever female division with the support of 7x world champion Layne Beachley. This division has flourished and is now home to some of the area’s brightest up and coming female surfers, with results ranging from finals appearances in the Regional Titles to semi-final finishes in the Seas The Day Surf Festival.

With a growing membership base spanning Micro-groms (under 12’s girls and boys) all the way up to over 60’s, our goal is to continue to work with the community and support the development of surfing in Freshwater.

At Freshwater Boardriders, we’re dedicated to fostering growth and unlocking potential within our community.

Junior Development Programs

Freshwater Boardriders Junior Development Program presented by Harbord Diggers

At Freshwater Boardriders, we’re committed to supporting junior surfers in developing their skills and passion for the sport. We provide a safe and encouraging environment where young surfers can refine their technique, learn from experienced mentors, and build confidence in the water.

Through regular high-performance coaching, regional and interstate competitions, and dedicated junior events, we aim to foster both progression and a strong sense of community. Our focus on nurturing young talent helps ensure a bright and exciting future for the next generation of surfers.

FBI Microgrom division

The Freshwater Boardriders Micro Grom division is designed for our youngest surfers aged 12 and under. It provides a safe and supportive environment for groms to build skills, confidence, and a love for the sport.

With guidance from experienced coaches, Micro Grom surfers learn the fundamentals of surfing, water safety, and beach awareness through regular training sessions and monthly club competitions. Just as importantly, it’s a place where they form friendships, support each other, and feel part of the club from an early age.

The program is all about creating a fun, positive introduction to surfing while building a strong foundation for future progression.

Female Development Programs

Freshwater Boardriders Club is committed to supporting and developing female surfers within the club. With guidance and mentorship from 7-time world champion Layne Beachley, our female members have access to world-class experience to help them grow, improve, and progress their surfing.

Through training sessions, competitions, and on-land coaching, the program provides opportunities for female surfers to build skills and confidence in the sport. Since launching in 2023, the division has grown to over 20 members and continues to build strong momentum.

Past initiatives have included coaching and video analysis with Layne, surf skate sessions, competing at Seas the Day (the largest all-female surf comp), where the team placed 4th, as well as a training day at URBNSURF, among others.
